Call of Duty 4 Takes Top Spot on LIVE, Beats Down Halo 3

January 22nd, 2008

Major Nelson has posted his weekly Xbox LIVE stats for the week beginning January 14th. Among the various letters and numbers, one interesting statistic stands out. Call of Duty 4 has moved into the #1 spot, beating Halo 3 in the number of unique users playing the game. I haven’t gone back week-by-week to verify this claim, but I believe this is the first time Halo 3 wasn’t #1 since it’s release in September. If that claim is false, please set me straight in the comments.

This is pretty unprecidented, especially considering many people* think of the 360 as “the Halo 3 box.” I guess there is room for two games in this box.

*I am not included in this group of people. Taking a look at the list of games I own should prove that claim.

Rumor: 360 Price Cut Coming?

January 22nd, 2008

Per gaming blog TheBitBag (and an unnamed Microsoft tipster), a surprise price drop of $49 might be waiting in the wings for the Xbox 360 Premium bundle.

The cause? Grand Theft Auto IV. The tipster says:

Now if you are still a PS2 or Xbox owner sitting on the fence waiting for this game to be released, then it would be a good time to invest in a next gen system.

Of course, remember that this is a rumor, and I generally don’t believe anything from an unsubstantiated source until it happens. Still, for the few of you who don’t have a 360, this could be Good News™.

Follow-up: Confidential “Red Ring” Source Responds to Questions

January 21st, 2008

Jake over on 8Bit Joystick.com has posted a follow-up to the recent interview he did with a mysterious Microsoft “insider.” The source claimed to have a detailed knowledge regarding the Xbox 360 hardware problems. Many people around the intarwebs have taken issue with his statements, doubting the authenticity of some of his claims. The source has responded to some of the questions that were raised in order to solidify his reputation on the matter.

His answers are pretty convincing and make it difficult to doubt his story. As I stated previously, the claims he’s made don’t seem that far-fetched to me. I guess we’ll never know for sure if he’s legit, unless he comes forward and reveals his true identity. What do you think?

Rumor: The Real Reasons for the RROD

January 20th, 2008

redring.jpg8Bit Joystick.com has posted an in-depth interview with someone they claim is a Microsoft insider. In the interview, this anonymous source reveals a lot of interesting “facts” about the Xbox 360 hardware failures and why he thinks these problems exist.

There’s no sure way to tell if this guys is for real, but many of the things he says make sense and don’t seem far fetched at all. But you should still probably take this with a small grain of salt. Not one of those regular sized grains of salt. Hit the link for the interview.
